Context

Killstar is an internationally recognised alternative fashion brand with a strong and immediately legible visual identity. The commission was for large-format bespoke signage for their office environment, an object that needed to feel as considered and distinct as the brand itself, rather than off-the-shelf commercial signage with a logo applied to it.

Approach

After initial discussions with the client, the letterforms were modelled digitally and a visual mock-up produced and signed off before any fabrication began. Getting client approval at the digital stage keeps revisions out of the physical process and ensures the finished object lands as expected.

The letters were 3D printed in sections and reinforced structurally using automotive body filler, which was sanded back to provide a smooth, stable substrate. Each piece was then primed, base-coated, and worked through a multi-stage hand-painting process to achieve the antique gold finish, a finish that reads as aged and tactile rather than sprayed or printed. The brush marks visible in the gold are deliberate, giving the letters depth and a craft quality that flat paint or vinyl wrap wouldn't produce.

All fabrication, finishing, and on-site installation were completed independently.

Outcome

The signage was installed on site and integrated into the Killstar office environment, where it now functions as the primary brand statement in the space, being the first thing workers and visitors see when they enter the premises. The finished sign has since been used as a backdrop for brand content and photography by Killstar's own team.
